ADJUNCT FACULTY AND USES OF CAMPUS FACILITIES: THEY JUST DON'T GET NO RESPECT
- Kathleen B. Nelson, Ph.D., CSEP, CMP, University of Nevada Las Vegas, William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration

Today, many campuses rely on graduate assistants and adjuncts to teach over 50% of the courses being taught on campus. These adjuncts receive no medical/retirement benefits (although some of our adjuncts teach more classes per semester than their fellow Ph.D. colleagues), no recognition, and like Rodney Dangerfield said, “They just don’t get no respect.”

Many articles have been written about parents who feel they are not getting their money’s worth when they choose a college for their children with a prestigious faculty—only to find their students sitting in huge lecture halls being taught by graduate assistants. They feel duped by the university marketing collateral woven with pictures of Nobel Laureates and famous politicians who will be teaching their students. It is a great recruiting tool, but not so great when the reality hits them that these highly publicized professors are off doing research rather than spending time in the classroom. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
- Rita Stewart, President
765-285-1396 / rstewart@bsu.edu

As I go about my work this year as president, I am constantly aware of the fact that I could not do this without a lot of help and support from all of you. In fact, one of the greatest rewards of my membership in this vital, healthy Association is that I never have to “go it alone”!

During my years working with the ACCED-I Mentoring Program, I came across a memorable story of the power of groups at work. In her book, The Mentor’s Guide, Lois J. Zachary relates the story of two trees. One was planted in the middle of an open field with no competition for sunshine and nutrients, while the other tree was planted in the midst of a forest. Ecologists tell us the tree planted in the clearing of a forest will grow more successfully. The roots of the forest tree are able to follow the intricate pathways created by former trees and embed themselves more deeply than the tree breaking new ground in an open field. Over time, the roots of the forest trees actually graft themselves to one another, creating a mat of life hidden beneath the earth, enabling the stronger trees to share their resources with the others so the whole forest becomes healthier. ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (RIT) RECENTLY FETED THEIR RETIRING PRESIDENT IN STYLE
- Cynthia Gray, assistant vice president, government and community relations

At Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) we just said goodbye to our president of 15 years, Albert J. Simone. Among the many groups, who honored him throughout the year, both within RIT and in the greater Rochester community, we planned a very successful "Community Tribute to Al and Carolie Simone" on June 16 in our Gordon Field House and Activities Center. The event was attended by nearly 900 guests, and while many were faculty and staff, the event was also attended by a great number of corporate and community leaders; a true tribute to the Simone's impact on the Rochester community. While the event was a fitting tribute to a great leader who made such a lasting impact on our university, it was also an opportunity for us to showcase the growth of our university over the last 15 years. Jack Thornton, one of ACCED-I’s 11 esteemed founders, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on July 21, 2007 from a battle with cancer. Jack was instrumental in the creation and development of the Association and touched the lives of many ACCED-I members, as a mentor and friend.

Jack was born in Troy, Texas on Sept. 23, 1930 to L.L. and Alma Mae (McMullen) Thornton. He graduated from Temple High School in 1948. He married Irene McClain on June 18, 1950 in Temple. HOT TOPIC: How to Plan a Campus Event Workshop

In this issue of e-Communiqué we review a discussion that took place on the ACCED-I LISTSERV in July regarding how to plan a campus event workshop.

Question:

Event Services, along with our Catering Dept., are going to start offering workshops to student organizations and departments on how to plan a campus event. We want to cover everything: procedures for making a reservation, timeline for planning an event, event advertising, catering, parking, etc. Is there anyone who is currently doing this that would be interested in sending me some of your materials, ideas, etc. Thanks so much! VETERAN'S PERSPECTIVE

For this installment of Veteran’s Perspective we asked newcomers in the field of collegiate conferences and events (less than two years of experience) what would they like to know from a veteran in the field (15 years or more of experience).

We asked a couple of veterans the following: Have you seen significant changes in housing for conference and event participants over the years? If so, what are they? Have the changes been easy to adapt to for the institution and conferences services? What do you see in the future of housing for conference guests? Click here for full article.

ASK THE ETHICS GUY! THE ETHICS OF APOLOGIES
- Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D.

Every day, it seems, we learn of an apology from a prominent executive, celebrity or political figure in response to an indiscretion of some sort. Those in the public eye have an unfortunate tendency to apologize only after they have been found with a hand in the cookie jar. When this happens, it is only natural for a skeptical (or cynical) public to wonder, "Are they apologizing for their conduct, or simply because they were caught?" Click here for full article.

FOUR QUICK TIPS FOR GETTING EVENT SPONSORSHIP
- Jim Romanik, founder, ePly

Many events rely on sponsorship to allow the event to happen but attracting sponsors is not always easy. Potential sponsors are generally inundated with requests and unless very well presented, most sponsorship proposals will not be graced with a second glance.

While many organizations have a sponsorship budget, unless you present your sponsorship proposal as a concise business document that stands out from the rest and is clearly aligned with the company’s business objectives, you may find that your event is short on funds. Click here for full article.
