Loyola Marymount University hosted the Kobe Bryant Basketball camp this summer, with meals, housing, and of course, basketball.  According to Trish Carlson, assistant director of conference and events services, "It was an interesting time, but overall it was a great experience."

The University of Redlands partnered with College Summit this year to host two workshops. Tired of seeing students "graduate" from a teen center to the streets, J.B. Schram became determined to help admissions offices see students the way he saw them.  These workshops are designed to help bright, low-income students who, with the right support during the post-secondary transition, could propel their lives in a positive direction and enter college.

The University of California in Riverside has begun a new chapter.  They are building a new dining commons with twice the square footage, several lounges and nine conference rooms (including one that will seat 1,000 people).  There will be many outdoor usable spaces, plenty of work space for student organizations, and advanced technology capabilities. It will be a great addition to an already excellent campus.

California State University, Northridge created a new conference coordinator position and hired Brooke Yeager to fill the position.  Brooke has been on the Residential Life side of Student Housing for several years and is fitting perfectly into our world of conferences.  CSUN has also hired Karla La Rosa as manager of conference and hospitality services.  Karla has many years of experience renting space to film crews and off campus groups at CSUN, so her expertise will come in handy in her new role.

Our regional meeting is coming in October!  The Region 2 meeting will be at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to continue planning for the 2008 ACCED-I Annual Conference.  The dates of the meeting will be Wednesday, October 10, and Thursday, October 11, 2007.  The hospitality committee will stay and meet on Friday, October 12. Anyone wishing to help with the Annual Conference is welcome to attend.  There is a room block at the Embassy Suites, near the university, from October 9-11, for $159.00/night.  You can call the hotel directly at 702-795-2800 or 1-800-Embassy.  The block is being held until September 17, 2007.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Region 2!

Region 11ers will be following the star to Bethlehem – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania that is – November 4-7, 2007 for our regional meeting. Located in the beautiful Lehigh Valley, Bethlehem’s colonial roots, college town atmosphere, and central location in our region, will make this a great place for us to learn, network, and just have fun with friends. The folks at co-host institutions Lehigh University and DeSales University, as well as our Regional Director-Elect, Jeff Barta, are working hard on an engaging and enjoyable program. Registration information and schedule will be available soon. Keep checking our regional webpage on the ACCED-I website.

Congratulations go out to:
Jill Nowicki, manager of event operations, Rider University (NJ) on her engagement. The wedding is scheduled for June 8, 2008. Only an experienced event planner would dare to have her wedding right after commencement!

Michele McVay, associate director of conferences & special events, Georgian Court University (NJ) and her husband, George Arnold, on the birth of George Caden Alexander. Baby G.’s “fairy godmothers” in Conferences & Special Events report that he is stunning!

Erin Schuetz, coordinator of events and scheduling, Clarion University (PA) on starting her graduate studies in Student Affairs in Higher Education at Indiana University of PA. In her spare time, Erin is pursuing her CCEP.

Connie Castellano has been appointed the new director of the Gannett Art Gallery at SUNYIT. This will be in addition to her other duties as coordinator of campus & corporate events. She used to work at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Gallery prior to conferencing, so she has experience in museum education/school programs & exhibitions. The gallery has an exhibition coming up in October on the islands and temple culture of Malta. Connie said, "One of our foundation members led an elderhostel to the islands of Malta and has become pretty good friends with someone who directs an organization that is responsible for the preservation and history of Malta. That person is organizing the exhibition to house at SUNYIT. We are organizing all kinds of neat gallery activities, tours, and programs around this exhibition. It will be very impressive!"

Hofstra University (NY) has implemented Resource 25. It combines scheduling of classes with the scheduling of events. Kathleen Dwyer, associate director of event management systems, would love to hear from other schools using R25 with Webviewer, and how they’ve resolved issues such as combining policies and procedures of all user departments. Contact Kathleen at Kathleen.S.Dwyer@hofstra.edu if you can help.

To better serve their Clarion University (PA) campus, the events and scheduling office has changed their name to “Office of Conference & Event Services."

Summer Programs at Hampshire College concluded August 12 so we are on the home stretch! All went well, and fortunately, I do not have any horror stories to share. I did notice that overall group counts were down. I have heard from a few of you that you found this as well. Industry trend? Sounds like it.

Danny Camacho, Region 12 director-elect, and I have begun planning the 2007 regional meeting. The date and location have been set; Thursday and Friday, November 15 and 16 at the Boston Park Plaza. The location was an easy choice as the Park Plaza will be the site for the 2009 ACCED-I Annual Conference and much work needs to be done on behalf of Region 12. Additional details will follow; however, please mark your calendars.

Other Region 12 “hot topics”
Bridgewater State College has had a few changes.  After six years at Bridgewater, Laura Aikey resigned from her position as director of conference and event services, and is now working as an instructor for Kinetic Solutions Event Software.  Dan McHugh accepted the position of director of conference and events and started on August 20th.

After 30 years in the Special Programs office at Colby College, Joan Sanzenbacher will retire this fall. Jacques Moore, who completes his ninth summer at Colby in August, will succeed Joan as director of special programs. Before coming to Colby, Jacques worked at the University of Maine, Presque Isle and the University of Maine at Farmington in their conference offices. Jacques has been active in ACCED-I for a number of years and was co-chair for the Day of Caring in both San Diego and St. Louis.

Karen Ledger continues as scheduling manager (commencement chair, EMS guru, and wedding planner extraordinaire). Karen is co-chairing the local arrangements for the ACCED-I Annual Conference in Boston in 2009 along with Roberta Hudson of Yale and Nicole Vanderpole of Simmons. They ask all our Region 12 members to stay tuned for further news of opportunities to participate in the planning process.

Yale had its first summer experience with coordinating the filming of a major motion picture on campus at the same time several faculty conferences were in progress and the high school and international programs were starting up.   This was not Yale's first experience as a film location, but this one was a significant presence on campus, as opposed to previous, more localized film shoots that have not impacted the wider Yale community significantly.  They were caught between the excitement of the film, the revenue generated for Yale and the City of New Haven, and the influx of visitors to New Haven during filming - and not to mention the challenge of stretched campus resources, restrictions to movement around the campus, and trying to manage activities around a constantly changing film schedule.

Filming lasted a week, but it was a long week.  Susan Adler, director of Yale conference services, was charged with managing one of the location sites to protect Yale's interests. This involved working with the film location directors, approving film shoot dates and times, communicating with campus staff that would be affected by the film schedule and checking facilities for damage.  She also followed up and made sure that any changes made to the facilities for the film were undone after filming ended.   In certain situations she was required to be on site during filming.  If you ask her if she would like to do this again, she would say, once is enough, for her, at least!

Elizabeth A.Morin, director of conference services at the University of Southern Maine has successfully completed all the requirements for ACCED-I's CCEP certification.  It was challenging and she is so pleased to be certified!
