First, some comings and goings from Region 8 members. While the heat seems to be on the minds and activities for most, it appears to be a normal summer for most campuses. Lisa Salazar from Lewis University reports a typically busy summer conference season including a June 24 Homecoming kickoff complete with bands, fireworks, campus tours, reunions and new clock tower dedication.
Barb Pierpont at Michigan State reports the biggest single conference to date at MSU with about 8,400 participants visiting East Lansing for The National Order of the Arrow Conference (Scouting's National Honor Society).
A Region 8 welcome to new Purdue conference coordinator Ed Keller. Ed joined Purdue from Memorial Union's Catering and Events office. Also, Purdue hosted more than 6,000 for the Evangelical Free Youth Conference July 2-9.
At Western Kentucky University, it was another year of hosting the International BB Gun Championships. Heat has been the issue at WKU as well with many 100+ heat indexes registered in July. The Events office is preparing again for the "Festival of Sand" event in August in which various sand carvings are created by community groups. With WKU celebrating its centennial year, the sculpting theme is set and our president wants nothing less than first place (always a familiar request from the top...only the best!)
From Denison University (Ohio), Vicki Sussman probably sums up summer conferences/events the best and we quote, "...just the typical - EMS runs, coaches mad because the other camps are using their fields (and gyms), physical plant frustrated because they must keep their contractors on schedule to meet my needs, everyone tired of food service meals, students who think we work too long and too much, etc. Weddings, weddings and more weddings, sports and youth camps everywhere, neighbors who don't like noises made by cheerleaders and bands...just the norm!"
Speaking of Denison, we hope you have your calendar marked for our regional meeting October 4-6. The hotels have been booked and tentative agenda is just about complete. Again, if anyone is interested in presenting a session, please contact Vicki or myself. We're hoping for a good turnout and looking forward to seeing Denison. We'll be sending out more complete information soon.
Hope everyone's summer "cools" down and we'll all just get ready for the "normal" academic year activities.

Region 9! It's been a long hot summer that has gone by rather quickly. It all seems like a blur. Now that our busy conference season is over, it's time to look forward to the fall and our regional meeting. This year's meeting will be held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, October 12-14, 2006. Details will be coming on the regional LISTSERV. If you're working on your CCEP, this will be a great opportunity for you to meet one of your requirements by leading a session. Even if you're not working on your CCEP, you can share your knowledge and experiences with others in the region. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar for a great time of networking, learning and fun. To volunteer to participate in the meeting, contact our Regional Director-Elect Dan Dykstra at dan.dykstra@housing.gatech.edu. See you in Georgia!
Oh and by the way - If you haven't subscribed to the regional LISTSERV, please do it now so you won't miss regional announcements.

The Region 10 Regional Meeting is set for November 9-11 in Baltimore! We will be getting ready for the Annual Conference in March. Watch for more information.
If you will be coming to the Regional we are staying at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. Please contact Peter Kaiser ptkaiser@aacc.edu if you plan to stay at the hotel so we can book enough rooms.
On a more somber note - our thoughts go out to the folks at Roanoke College. Stephanie Garst and her staff have had a rough summer and we hope all is well and that they know our Region, as well as all members of ACCED-I are thinking about them.

Just a few stories of courage, perseverance and success from Region 11 to get us through the rest of the summer…in other words, a normal day at the office!
Teamwork at its Finest
From Kathy Kollar Valovage, Bloomsburg University of PA
It wasn't even a named hurricane, but the devastation it left behind mirrored it. The Flood of '06 hit north central Pennsylvania with a fury likened to that of Hurricane Agnes from 1972. Flood waters covered the south and western sides of town after days of constant rain. Water from the swollen creek met with the overflown Susquehanna River to create a real mess in Bloomsburg. Hundreds of families and businesses were evacuated, and Bloomsburg University was there to help.
BU opened its doors as an evacuation site for the town. The Housing staff worked around the clock for three days straight, operating a 24-hour information desk in Columbia Residence Hall. Eleven student staff, three graduate assistants and one Area Coordinator from Residence Life went above and beyond their call of duty to assist in Bloomsburg's time of need. They worked right alongside dedicated custodial, campus police, town police, PEMA, emergency personnel from agencies across the region and Aramark Campus Dining to serve local townsfolk, and even some BU employees displaced by the sudden flooding.
Summer students were bused home; those that couldn't leave were reassigned across campus as the university conserved water. When the electricity temporarily went out, the staff jumped in to keep the evacuees calm. Games and toys were procured from campus childcare and other residence halls across campus to entertain young children during the crisis. Campus Dining stayed open to prepare meals using paper and plastic products when the town water dried up; they continued operations for more than five days until clean water finally came back. Even then the work continued, with having to boil water for days afterward; for cleaning, for preparing food, for drinking.
Weary folks began returning home as the flood waters receded. It is an arduous task to clear debris and mud from so many basements and first floors. But Bloomsburg folk are a sturdy bunch. Even as residents returned to their homes, University employees were again pitching in at the Fernville Fire Hall, preparing and serving hot meals to those folks who lived right along the creek and were still cleaning up a week following the flood. BU couldn't be prouder of our colleagues across campus for their dedication, hard work, positive attitudes, and warm giving hearts during this latest natural disaster. “Teamwork at its finest” says it all.
When the Goin' Gets Tough...
From Carolyn Manley, Carnegie Mellon University
That phrase was the inspiration for our CES (Conference & Event Services) team during THE toughest weekend we may have ever had in this office! June 24-25, 2006 pushed us to the edge, but we survived! - - and learned a lot about ourselves and each other in the process.
That weekend we hosted five huge conference groups (one international computer science conference, three pre-college programs and one international graduate program) consisting of approximately 1,100 people. On the Wednesday prior, our four full-time staff and six students set out on a ‘fantastic voyage’ of setup logistics (check, double check, triple-dog check), rental equipment, room keys, various catering menus for vegan, vegetarian, challah, flexitarian and kosher (with last minute changes, of course!), participant packets, confirming e-mails, credit card receipts, phone calls, bed/bath linen checks, unexpected early arrivals (um, didn’t you get my form??), microphones, document cameras, recreation passes, parking passes - - well you get the idea. The average workday from that Wednesday to the following Sunday, began at 7:30 am and concluded around 11 pm nightly. Our fastidious director, Beth Yazemboski led the pack by adding a few more early morning hours to that tally. But the night that ‘takes the cake’ is Friday, June 23 rd. We each logged in a whopping 20 hours! Whatever could go wrong that night did go wrong (good thing Wal-Mart is open 24 hours!), but we dug our heels in and pulled it off.
But that Saturday morning (after a cold shower in the dorm - - no hot water!!!) we donned our lime green conference shirts and presented each of our clients and guests with a participant packet, room key and a warm smile.
When the goin’ gets tough, the Carnegie Mellon CES staff gets goin’!!!
Summeriteens
From Connie Castellano, SUNYIT
After many years of running a single academic camp each summer, SUNYIT blossomed into a full-scale summer academic program for area teens in 2006. Students from 19 school districts ranging in age from 12 to 20 have enrolled in one or several of a total of seven academic camps to engage in out-of-the-box learning with SUNYIT professors and staff instructors. Camps include: Robotics, Creative Writing, Health Informatics, Digital Video, BizKids, and Girls' Math/Science.
The camps have generally run from 9 am to 3 pm and lasted one week. We have designed them to stretch the imagination of the students, and have included recreational components on the Ropes Course and in the pool. Community support through radio and newspaper coverage has been terrific, and we have generated genuine on-campus enthusiasm for outreach programming targeting teens. Parent feedback has also been excellent.
Calling all Monday Morning QBs!
Best of luck to all ACCED-I Region 11 members who are currently hosting NFL Training Camps: New York Jets at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY; Pittsburgh Steelers at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA; and Philadelphia Eagles at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA!
Upcoming Regional Meeting
The Region 11 Regional Meeting will be hosted by Villanova University October 29 – 31, 2006. Consider sharing your expertise with your colleagues by being a presenter at the regional meeting! Requests for proposals and further details will be mailed/emailed in the coming weeks!!

As previously stated, the program will take place on Thursday, November 16 and Friday, November 17, 2006 and will be primarily based at Hampshire College. I am happy to announce that our keynote speaker will be Chuck Salem, President of Unique Venues.
