SUNYIT, Utica, NY - Quad-C Receives Significant Regional Economic Development Funding
SUNYIT’s Computer Chip Commercialization Center (Quad-C) was the largest single project funded in the first round of the statewide Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) process. Of the $60.2 million awarded to projects in the Mohawk Valley region, $15 million will go to the Fort Schuyler Management Corporation (FSMC) to support the construction of the Quad-C. FSMC is a private, not-for-profit corporation, formed by the SUNY Research Foundation and the SUNYIT Foundation to facilitate the construction of the Quad-C. "The initial outcome of this process holds great promise for SUNYIT and for the entire Mohawk Valley," said SUNYIT President Wolf Yeigh, one of the Mohawk Valley REDC’s vice chairs. "Our Council did a great job in articulating a regional vision, and SUNYIT is an important part of the plan that will lead to economic growth and future development." Also included in the list of funded projects: $274,000 for “Cyber Shield,” an academic-industry partnership that will develop a state-of-the-art malware laboratory environment that will instruct students through a reverse engineering process. The lab will be built through a partnership between SUNYIT and Assured Information Security, Inc. (AIS), of Rome, N.Y. The plan also awards $5 million to Mohawk Valley Economic Development Growth Enterprises Corporation (EDGE) for infrastructure work related to the development of the Marcy NanoCenter at SUNYIT, the site west of Edic Road that EDGE is marketing globally to attract a suitable high-tech industry tenant. The Quad-C is part of a technology complex that will include the Center for Advanced Technology, an academic building; conceptual designs show the two buildings joined by an atrium. In the Quad-C, researchers and industry partners will collaborate in support of the development and commercialization of nanotechnology. The three-story building will include a state-of-the art “clean room” for nanotechnology research. As part of SUNYIT’s partnership with UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, two industry tenants, nfrastructure and Valutek, have already announced plans to locate in the Quad-C. Daemen College Inauguration Features Traditional Chinese Dance
Margene Weiss, CCEP, reports that Daemen College, has been involved in some major events in 2011. Although being asked to Co-Chair these committees meant work, it was gratifying to work with the President, shape these events, and work with great committees!
We planned a big celebration when our current President retired May 6...just a few weeks before Commencement. Then the incoming President, Dr. Clausen, an internal appointment, took the position in June and decided that early September would be fine for his Inauguration. What slow summer?
In spite of bad weather and a last minute decision to pull the entire event and reception indoors, we had a fabulous Inauguration event! To celebrate Dr. Clausen's scholarship in modern Chinese culture and to emphasize the international perspective he brings to Daemen College, we decided on a Traditional Lion Dance to start the ceremony. Since very few people have seen the real performance, it was the delightful highlight to the event, made front page of the Buffalo News and was bi g in the media. It was a huge hit with students and Trustees alike. To get the real thing, I had to contract with guys from Hong Luck Kung Fu in Toronto, Canada and had to work with an immigration attorney to arrange for their successful passage through US/Canadian customs. Apparently a van load of guys at our borders now brings intense scrutiny...and they said they would be going to the international Kung Fu/Lion Dance competition where they perform with knives etc! There were other internal maneuverings that threatened the entire event, so the success is very sweet indeed.
It is very rare when the image and the message come together so perfectly. With the image of the Traditional Lion Dancers, the region knows that our new President, Dr. Clausen is a Chinese scholar and our campus strives to include a global perspective to everything we accomplish.
The Traditional Chinese Lion Dance photo was the College holiday card this year. Yeay!
You can see the YouTube video here, the dance is 6 minutes in.
