Region 2 Leadership Changes
There have been some recent changes in Regional Leadership that we would like to share with you. Regional Director-Elect Jed Cravalho, Director of Conference and Event Services at Oral Roberts University has stepped down from the position effective immediately. We want to thank Jed for his service to the region and his dedication to the Association and wish him all the best.
Per the regional election guidelines, all candidates that ran in the last election (fall of 2016) were approached in order of number of votes received to determine if they were still willing and able to serve in the position. I am happy to announce that Sravanthi Meka, Marketing Manager at Georgia Institute of Technology, has accepted the position of Regional Director-Elect. Her term will begin immediately and she will become the Regional Director next March. We would like to thank her for her thoughtful consideration of the position and for agreeing to start right away. There is no doubt that she will be an excellent addition to the regional leadership team.
Kenney Promoted to Associate Director
Richard (Richie) Kenney was recently promoted to Associate Director at the University of Miami, taking on a broader role with conference services as well as housing operations and facilities for the Department of Housing & Residential Life. Richie is entering his fifth year at the University of Miami.
Spencer Earns Graduate Certificate from Rosen College of Hospitality Management
Erica Spencer, CCEP, Director, Conference Services Bureau at Florida Institute of Technology, has earned a Graduate Certificate in Destination Marketing & Management from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. The Graduate Certificate in Destination Marketing & Management provides knowledge and information that facilitates the effective marketing and management of tourist destinations. The Graduate Certificate required completion of three masters-level academic courses at the Rosen College with a grade of ‘B’ or better. Spencer maintained a 4.0 GPA for this certificate program.
Welch Receives Award
Congratulations are in order to Linda Welch, Director of Conferences at Vanderbilt University, for winning the 2017 Mark Manasco Community Service Award from the Nashville Pride Committee. The Mark Manasco Community Service Award is given to members of the LGBTQ community who demonstrate the late Mark Manasco's devotion to community service and various LGBTQ organizations in Middle Tennessee. Linda was instrumental in celebrating LBGTQ culture and entertainment through printed media in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Congratulations Linda on this well deserved award!
Duke University Promotions
On April 1, Allyson Hemric was promoted from UCAE Office Manager to become Assistant Manager for Conference and Event Services. Allyson had worked with summer programs a bit during the last two summers. In her new role she has been a strong addition to the CES team.
On July 1, Jeremy Elmore was promoted from Assistant Manager to Assistant Director for Conference and Event Services. In his expanded role, Jeremy accepted the challenge overseeing all aspects for summer programs.
Jones Joins Emory Team
Emory University is pleased to announce we have hired Brittany Jones as our Assistant Director of Conference Services and Marketing. This is a new role to replace the campus life fellow we have had every year and to assist the whole Housing department with marketing year-round. After a national search, Brittany emerged as the top candidate because of her background running camps and her amazing technological prowess. Garst Honored as a Clemson Community Hero
This spring Stephanie Garst, Executive Director of the US Play Coalition was named a 2017 Clemson Community Hero for her work with the US Play Coalition by Clemson University Athletics in partnership with ScanSource, Inc. She was honored at a Clemson men's basketball game.
Conference Services Featured in Georgia Southern Magazine
The Conference Services department at Georgia Southern University was featured in Georgia Southern Magazine in an article titled, "One Stop, Two Goals." The article focuses not only on the facilities and services that Georgia Southern offers, but how students are an integral part of the operation. The editorial piece can be found here
Payne Advances to National Contest
Michele Payne, Assistant Director of Communications for University of Arkansas School of Law submitted two entries in the local Veterans Creative Arts Competition sponsored by the Veteran’s Health Care System of the Ozarks. Payne’s poem “Choice” won first place and will advance to the national competition. Her second entry, an essay about her personal experience during military service titled “Lies” won second place in the personal experience-inspirational category. First place winners in the national contest will participate in the National Veterans Creative Arts festival in Buffalo, New York in October.
Erica Spencer Nominated to Honor Society
Erica Spencer, CCEP, Director of Conference Services Bureau at Florida Institute of Technology, has been nominated by her peers and colleagues to membership in The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest, most selective, and most prestigious all-discipline honor society. Membership is by invitation only, and Spencer was nominated as a professional staff member who has achieved distinction within the university. Spencer will be formally inducted into the organization at a ceremony on April 12, 2017.
Georgia Southern University to Merge
Georgia Southern University will be merging/consolidating with Armstrong State. The GSU Department of Conference Services has now moved back to GSU housing and will be taking over external commencement and responsible for the new minor policy.
What's Happening Around the Region
Don't Miss the Drive-In at NC State University on March 1st
NC State University Conference & Guest Services invites you to join fellow Region 2 members for a Drive-In Conference at NC State University in Raleigh! We will gather from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday, March 1 to share ideas. The day will include a tour of NC State's newly renovated and expanded Talley Student Union, lunch in an on-campus restaurant, and opportunities to openly discuss concerns facing each of our campuses. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Parking will be $5 per vehicle, with permits sent to registered guests in advance.
