Modules
: Attendees will be assigned a group during on-site registration and rotate between the three modules listed below.

Ignite Sessions: Informal conversations in roundtable format to discuss module topics from earlier that day. Attendees will choose a group based on their operations demographics.

Presenter Q&A: Attendees will have the chance to ask additional questions and/or discuss in depth the methodology of all three modules previously presented. be assigned to one of the previous day's modules to discuss in depth the methodology of that module and give feedback.

You Were Born When?
Presented by: Marissa S. Pace, MBA, Director of Human Resources, Daemen College
 
Employers now encompass multi-generational employees like never before! The gap may be getting larger as employees are remaining in the workforce longer due to high health care costs in retirement. It is not uncommon to report to or be mentored by someone that is younger than you. How can we live and work in the same areas and have such a divide in our perceptions of work and how it should get done? Higher education institutions are producing leaders of tomorrow, so we should be leading this trend also. If this divide is not bridged sooner than later, then turnover will distract us from our goals and the costs will not allow us to sustain ourselves.

  •  Gain a better understanding of generational expectations and overcoming stereotypes
  •  Understand communication and work styles of the various generations
  •  Successfully manage and retain your talent no matter what age

Modules:

Train Like a Teacher, Hire Like a Recruiter: Best Practices for Recruiting, Hiring, and Developing Student Workers

Presented by: Katherine J. Veach, Director, Conferences & Events Franklin & Marshall College

The process of recruiting, hiring, and developing student workers is essential to a collegiate conference program’s success, but it is far too easy for these practices to become repetitive and stale – and over time, to lose their effectiveness. This module focuses on using the most current standards in the fields of human resources and organizational development to create or strengthen consistent, fair and useful hiring practices and protocols. The module also highlights the best and most current educational models for effective training and development of today’s college students. This interactive experience will allow participants to immediately utilize the models and theories they are discussing, resulting in some tangible takeaways for implementation at their home schools.

Learning Objectives:

  • Engage with a broad spectrum of the most current and successful educational and organizational theories that inform excellent recruiting, hiring, and development of workers
  • Identify areas of strength and weakness in their existing interview processes and training plans
  • Construct, administer, and evaluate behavioral interview questions
  • Develop and practice training modules utilizing current educational strategies

 

Onboarding Student Workers and How To Build an Effective Team
Presented by Robert “Bob” Mead-Colegrove, Assistant Dean for Campus Life, Daemen College and Principal Consultant at BMCSPEAKS LLC.

Once student workers are hired it’s time to get them together and acclimated to the larger team.  This module focuses on team dynamics of student workers, motivation and ability of student workers, and how they learn to fit into the puzzle of your organization. The module also highlights successes and potential pitfalls when working with student workers.  The open discussion and experiential approach to this presentation will allow participants to be a part of the dialogue and learn from each other, as well as the presenter.   

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a better understanding of how to put the right people in the right spots for an effective student staff
  •  Understand the importance of motivation and ability with regards to student workers
  •  Know the culture of student workers and the “cycle” of their employment

Interns: Recruiting, Hiring and then What?
Presented by: David Wright, Residential Operations Manager, Yale University

How do you build your team of employees? Then once your team is built where do you go from there? This module will focus on the benefits of incorporating interns into your team along with the value and opportunity they can bring to your operation.  The discussion will guide managers and supervisors on best practices for recruiting, hiring, training and developing interns for your department.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand your institution's hiring timeline
  • Improve your overall employee selection approach
  • Learn how to get your interns acclimated to your institution's housing operation and campus
