Regional News

From June - August 2010 issue of ACCED-I Connections:

From Carol McDoniel, Cal State Fullerton, Titan Student Union
Region 2's outgoing director, Carol McDoniel, was awarded the 2010 Alumni Service Award from her Alma Mater, Cal Baptist.  The award is for "exemplary effort in maintaining Alumni interest in California Baptist University."  The main reason cited in the presentation was her work in establishing CBU's Department of Campus Services (now Conferences & Events), including certification as an ACCED-I One-Stop Shop.  Congrats to Carol! See photo at right.

From Jim Raney, Region 2 director-elect, San Francisco State University
San Francisco State University Conference Services started its engines running for summer training and conferencing.  The first set of guests, Summer Orientation, arrived June 1st during the university furlough, but we didn't let it stop us.  So far Conference Services has over 100 participants registered and paid for during the month of June, a record for this department.  Summer Orientation is for incoming freshman and transfer students (including their parents) to get oriented on campus life and meet up with counselors in their particular college.  Though Conference Services has reduced its services for summer operations, we are getting ready for department changes that will occur within the next few months or so.  As a whole, the department is as strong as ever and bringing it on like it's never been brought.  LOL!

From Linae Ishii-Devine, CMP, Monterey Institute of International Studies - an affiliate of Middlebury College
The Monterey Institute of International Studies will officially integrate with Middlebury College.  After five years of a productive and promising affiliation, the Monterey Institute will finally become a graduate school of Middlebury College on July 1, 2010.

From Carrie McIntyre, Vanguard University
Carrie has secured another position at Vanguard and will no longer be working in collegiate events.  She will be in Vanguard's Communication Department as their only staff member.  Her new role involves academic advising and directly participating in Vanguard students' education.  She is sad to leave her ACCED-I friends, but excited to start the new chapter in her career.  Best of luck Carrie!

From Chris Gordon, Vanguard University
Chris added another member to his family on April 20th.  Samuel Charles Gordon weighed in at 8lbs, 5oz and was delivered at 10:57 pm.  Chris also recently finished his Master's program in clinical psychology.  Double congrats to Chris and his family!

From Jason Walley, UCLA, ACCED-I Region 2 director
UCLA is sad to be losing Lindsey Rice.  She was only with us for a couple of years, but she had a big impact on our social media campaign.  Much of the work to set up our Twitter and Facebook accounts was her doing.  We have added Shannon Arakaki to our team to replace Lindsey.  Shannon was formerly with the Getty Trust and worked on events at the J. Paul Getty Museum.  Shannon has already hit the ground running and hopefully you will all get the chance to meet her at either a future summit or Annual Conference.

From Phil Gin at Stanford University
We have had some staff changes as a result of the new conference center management business awarded to Stanford Conferences.  I am pleased to report that Carolyn Tomlin has been promoted to an assistant director role, responsible for oversight of the conference centers and our Meeting Planning Services.  We are also thrilled to have Suzette Escobar join the Stanford Conferences team as our newest conference account coordinator.  Suzette comes to us following four years in the Conference & Events Office at Princeton University and two years prior to that at Davidson College.
