New Horizons Service Dogs, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that partners trained dogs with the disabled, mostly in the area of wheelchair and mobility assistance. They are headquartered in Central Florida and provide service dogs to disabled clients primarily throughout the state of Florida.
New Horizon service dogs are trained to primarily assist adults and children in wheelchairs and also to assist those individuals with other mobility and balance problems. They have specialized programs for veterans with disabilities and children with autism. They also have facility dogs assisting in other working situations such as rehabilitative facilities, nursing homes and private homes, depending on the dog’s temperament and abilities. These service dogs are trained to perform numerous tasks such as retrieving items, opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, bracing and getting a phone in an emergency.
Teaming up with the Florida Department of Corrections, New Horizons Service Dogs train with inmates for 16-18 months, providing basic obedience and training before being returned to the facility for advanced training. This Prison Pup Program benefits not only the dogs, but the prisoners as well by giving them skills to improve their chances of success when re-entering the outside community.
