Student Spotlight - Amber Mann

In this issue of ACCED-I Connect, we meet Amber D. Mann, Coordinator, Conference Services and Housing Operations at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
What drove you to get involved with collegiate conferencing and events as a student?
In undergrad I was pursuing a degree in hospitality management and I wanted to find something on campus that could really help me develop my skills in hospitality before pursuing a job post-graduation. I was on walking on campus and when I saw the flyer for Conference Services and that they were hiring for the upcoming summer I immediately went home and applied for the position.
What benefits do you appreciate most from your time as a student working in collegiate conferencing and events?
I appreciate the amount of personal growth I was able to achieve at that moment. I had an amazing boss and coworkers at the time who really believed me and to feel that kind of support definitely pushed me the way I needed to jumpstart my career. Another amazing benefit for me was establishing connections with tons of people on and off campus. Being a part of the Conference Services you get to interact with so many people just on the Assistant level and once I became a Manger the following summer I got to connect with even more people. Having those connections and continuing to build on those relationships can help you later in life.
What is the best advice you ever got?
The best advice I ever received was : What is yours, will always be for you and no one can take that away from you.
What advice would you give to a student?
Be involved in campus! Do not spread yourself thin but stay involved and it will change your entire college experience.
Do you have a mentor or colleague that you look(ed) up to for guidance? Tell us about your relationship.
I do! I have two Amy Cribbs Warren my former boss and Zach Garrett my old colleague. They supported me, believed in me when I did not always believe in myself. Amy saw something in me from the first day I met her during my interview and I would not be where I am today in Collegiate Conference Services without her believing in me. Zach, taught me the skills to not only be a great manager but to be an even better leader for our team. The way he could communicate with our staff and our clients was unbelievable. These two helped me so much that I will forever be grateful for both of them.
Describe something that you did at work that you are most proud of.
The one thing I am most proud of is the opportunity I was given to be able to develop Assistants that worked up under me who wanted to pursue a role of Manager. I loved being able to support them and help them get to where they all wanted to be. It felt amazing to know that they trusted me to help them move up into a higher position on our team.
What do you love most about your job?
The clients and their campers/student who would stay on campus. Being able to meet new people, hear their stories always amazed me. When you can meet a stranger and you two form a bond. It’s amazing!
What do you like least about your job?
That we can’t always accommodate everybody lol our campus is only so big lol
