Most of us associate February with candy hearts and flowers. I have never been a fan of the day itself, always reminded of the first Valentine’s gift my sweetheart gave me that was an epic fail (it was a knife set - he was and still is, so practical). As an eternal optimist, however, I have always been in love with the idea of love.
I love my job. Sometimes I have to take time to remind myself of this—but it is always pretty easy to re-center and come back to. First of all, I love people, and as a Conference Services Director I am able to interact with all kinds of people all day long. Whether it is my favorite zone supervisor from the maintenance shop, or my favorite client who is a band teacher in Alabama but spends his summers with me running camps for gifted children, there is never a dull moment. My favorite people here, of course, are my staff and students here on campus. I am kept young and “in the know” by learning from my students who have been kind enough to keep me in their lives and make sure I am up on current pop culture. Now that I have teenagers at home, this could not be more important for my personal life as well!
Secondly, I feel like we are very fortunate to be able to work on a college campus. I love being in a place that is open to the free expression of ideas, and you will often see me attending lectures on campus or spending time in the campus Museum. When we are not in full construction season, I believe my college campus is one of the most beautiful places in the city. Taking a stroll around campus during lunch lifts my spirit in every way.
Finally, in my role as a collegiate conference director, I am able to be part of ACCED-I and connected to you. ACCED-I is my professional family, and I can’t imagine my life without you all in it. So, I will end this with, a reluctant, “Happy Valentine’s Day” but know that my love for you all is real!
