Spotlight on Mei-Chun Woo

The Student Development Action Team is shining the spotlight on ACCED-I members who are currently students, or were former students now working as a professional in the collegiate conference and events industry. This month we meet Mei-Chun Woo, Event Planning Supervisor, University of Washington.
What is the best advice you ever received?
The advice that comes to mind is ‘their emergency isn’t your emergency’. While it may sound callous, it helps me retain perspective with clients during stressful situations. That perspective allows me to keep a level head and better serve my clients.
What advice would you give to a student?
To take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. These can be opportunities with ACCED-I, your college or even off campus community. College is the time to grow and explore. You never know what you will find!
Describe something that you did at work that you are most proud of.
One of the things that I am most proud of is the revamping of my unit’s student employee program. This update included new position descriptions, training schedules and evaluations. We are about 3 years in and it is amazing to see the positive impacts the program is having.
What do you love most about your job?
Working with the students! They all have different needs and situations and I love working to determine how to best serve each of them. Understanding people and where they come from is one of my passions. It is so rewarding to see them grow and develop!
What do you like least about your job?
The volume. As I am sure is common at many universities, our unit is constantly battling a growing demand for space and events. The demand has grown but we have not been able to add another full-time position. At times the amount of work and the client’s needs are overwhelming. All I can do is keep putting one-foot in front of the other! My work with our students is what keeps me going every day!
