Greetings everyone – and happy summer! I would imagine that the months of June, July, and August include the hectic (sometimes chaotic!) summer camp and conference season for many of you.
If your campus is like mine, one of the bright spots in the summer is the opportunity to work with student staff – often times they are our lifeline and are the ones who can make or break a summer season. They are the front line in customer service, provide the first level of interaction with our guests, and very often set the tone for a campus conference experience.
Now is a good time to ask yourself the following:
How we are training and developing our student staff?
Are we providing them with the right opportunities to understand our culture and business?
Are we mentoring them to help them develop the proper job skills and knowledge for the future?
Are we assisting them in reaching new levels of knowledge, sophistication, and career development?
Are we providing them the right training and developing positive relationships with our student staff?
Are we giving training and mentoring the time and attention it deserves?
It is important to remember our student staff are a valuable commodity and crucial to our success – some of these young adults are the future of our profession and the future of ACCED-I. The work of the Student Development Action Team also continues to help recruit student members and engage those interested in learning more about our chosen field. I urge you to inspire them, encourage their growth, and mentor them for lifelong success.
Following along with my May article, when I shared some words of wisdom....... here is a link to one of my favorite TED Talks.
This particular talk relates to acts of kindness and encourages people to give what they can now – and more importantly reminds us, don’t wait! One of my favorite lines from this particular talk is: "Remember, not every day is going to offer us a chance to save someone's life but every day offers us an opportunity to affect one". In our world of conference and event planning, this is true all the time.......so make a difference now!
Happy June everyone – be well!

Brilliant words, Mary Kay! While we are all conference and events professionals, as we work in higher education; we are all, in kind, educators, too.
