Our 40th Annual Conference is just a few short weeks away. I hope you have registered, made hotel reservations and begun planning what sessions you’ll attend, which Meet, Greet, and Off to Eat dinners you will sign up for, and what sights and sounds of Providence you want to experience. The Annual Conference is my favorite event of the year as we have a chance to network, find out what’s new in our field, see old friends and meet new ones. We’ll be celebrating 40 years of ACCED-I and can take some time to think back to the ‘80s – walkmans, Teddy Ruxpin, VCRs, Rubix cubes, skip it’s – and so much more!
This month we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Random Acts of Kindness Day. Of those three, the Random Acts of Kindness resonates the most with me. Celebrating kindness and encouraging the pay it forward mentality are what makes our world a better place. Kindness improves our quality of life in the workplace as well as in the community. It brings people together – and doing good for others simply feels good. Kindness is contagious and you never know just how big an impact a small gesture of kindness can have. When people notice others being kind, they become inspired to do the same.
One of the ways that we can all contribute to the Random Acts of Kindness movement is by participating in this year’s Act of Caring – the Community Cupboard Food Pantry at Rhode Island School of Design. You can find the list of desired items here. ACCED-I members have a long history of generosity for our various Acts of Caring – I’m hoping we can all show the same to the Community Cupboard Food Pantry.
I can’t let my last Connect article go without including a TED talk – this one focuses on kindness and I hope you enjoy it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn9VxUPlC5g.
In closing – let me share a quote from Desmond Tutu that sums up all that is good about doing good and being kind: “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
